first_imgMali Ston: Oyster farming is the pride of this small town in the south of Croatia’s Adriatic Sea coast. But tasting the famed local delicacy may not be a good idea at the moment. Authorities have detected norovirus, which causes diarrhea and vomiting, in parts of the Mali Ston bay triggering shock and alarm among the breeders. The traditional oyster-tasting feast in March has been canceled and fears are mounting of huge financial losses to the local community that harvests about 3 million oysters each year. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today appealed for $3 million to ensure that 66,500 Togolese forced from their homes or otherwise affected after President Gnassingbe Eyadema’s death and the subsequent disputed elections do not go hungry in the months ahead.“The victims of Togo’s turmoil are some of the least acknowledged in the world,” WFP Regional Director for West Africa Mustapha Darboe said. “Thus far we have been able to provide for their most immediate needs, but we now need to ensure we have the resources to continue to do so in the months ahead. At least 100 people are known to have died in clashes around the April elections and many refugees remain too frightened to return home, WFP noted. So far, the agency has managed to borrow from its other operations, but with food stocks now running low and no sign of the refugees returning home, aid is required to feed 21,000 Togolese in Benin and 17,000 in Ghana, as well as 10,000 seeking sanctuary within Togo itself. The remaining 18,500 are members of local communities which are hosting the displaced from Togo and therefore have less food for themselves.Nearly 9,000 of those who have left their homes are housed in two refugee camps run by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Benin. The rest have been taken in by local communities in the three countries. To avoid long-term dependency on food aid, WFP intends to phase out free food distribution outside the refugee camps after two months and to replace it with assistance targeting the most vulnerable. There will also be projects in which people receive food in return for work on schemes designed to preserve or create roads, schools and health centres and free school meals to encourage children to continue their education. “WFP is mounting a regional response to a regional problem,” Mr. Darboe said. “We obviously hope that Togo will quickly find a political solution that is acceptable to all so that people can return to their homes in safety and with their minds at peace.” read more

OSU redshirt-freshman H-back Jalin Marshall (17) carries the ball during a game against Kent State on Sept. 13 at Ohio Stadium. OSU won, 66-0, thanks in part to Marsahll scoring his first touchdown as a member of the Buckeyes.Credit: Mark Batke / Photo editorWhen Jalin Marshall arrived at Ohio State, he found himself adjusting to not only a new level of football, but a new position as well. The redshirt-freshman H-back played quarterback at Middletown High School in Middletown, Ohio, but chose to change positions with his future on the gridiron in mind.“I felt like the next level for me wouldn’t be at quarterback,” the 5-foot-11-inch Marshall said Monday. “Just because of the height and all that stuff. I felt like it was a lot of challenges there for me to play at the next level.”Ranked the No. 1 recruit in the state by 247Sports coming out of high school, Marshall had opportunities to continue on as a signal caller in college, he said. But instead he chose a route that might seem the easy one to some, but he said he sees it differently.“I didn’t want to necessarily take the easier route, but I feel like I took the smarter route, as far as moving to receiver,” he said. “Coach (Urban) Meyer has definitely made me a better receiver and I continue to get better each week.”While his improvement on the field has been showcased in more recent weeks, Marshall’s time in Columbus didn’t start the way he may have hoped. Instead of stepping straight in and becoming a key contributor as a freshman, he sat out the 2013 season as a redshirt.Marshall said the switch to the college level from high school came down to his mental preparation, and added he simply wasn’t up to speed starting off when it came to knowing his assignments and recognizing the play of the defense on the fly.“That was a big part for me, because I wanted to think so much,” he said. “I wanted to evaluate what I was doing before I did it.”After not seeing the field as a true freshman, Marshall finally got his chance to don a scarlet and gray uniform on the field for a meaningful game on Aug. 30 when the Buckeyes took on Navy in Baltimore. In limited playing time, he showed flashes of his potential with three carries for seven yards and a pair of catches for another 19 yards.Marshall didn’t touch the ball in OSU’s week two loss to Virginia Tech before having a minor coming out party against Kent State on Sept. 13. In the Buckeyes’ 66-0 win against the Golden Flashes, he scored the first touchdown of his OSU career and returned two punts for 66 yards. He got into the end zone again two games later against Maryland before having a breakout performance as an all-around threat Saturday against Rutgers. He finished with three receptions for 58 yards, four punt returns for 45 yards and a kick return for 26 yards in the Buckeyes’ 56-17 victory.Meyer summed up Marshall’s performance against the Scarlet Knights in one sentence.“Jalin Marshall is much improved, graded a champion,” he said Monday. On Tuesday during the Big Ten teleconference, Meyer delved deeper into the journey Marshall has made to become a contributor at OSU. He said Marshall was “not a good practice player last year,” and struggled with his schoolwork. But this season, Meyer said he’s seen a change.“Here’s a kid now, one of our better practice players,” he said. “Does well in school, a gentleman, a guy that represents Ohio State the right way.”OSU wide receivers coach Zach Smith said Marshall’s recent success is a product of hard work as he tries to live up to his status as a top prospect coming out of high school.“Coming into the year, we had high expectations,” Smith said of Marshall on Monday. “Coming into his career, there were high expectations. He worked hard, tried to live up to those.”Marshall saved credit for Smith when it comes to his development from being a redshirt to leading the Buckeyes in all-purpose yards as they picked up their fourth win in a row.“He kinda demanded that I had to grow up, become a player,” he said. “Because I had to help the team, and I appreciate that from him.”And after his performance against Rutgers, Marshall said he feels his coaches have taken notice of his play.“I feel like they gave me good feedback, as far as how well I did,” he said. “They said that I was aggressive. I didn’t slide back from the coverage. I got the ball and I put my foot in the ground and went, so I think they liked that a lot.”Marshall said his explosive play against Rutgers was an extension of how he describes his personal style on the field.“I feel like when I get the ball … I want to score,” he said. “So as soon as I grab it, I turn up field as quick as I can and run as fast as I can to the straightest line to the end zone.”As a part-time starter at H-back and a starter on punt return, Marshall could have many more chances to plant his foot and go in the coming weeks. His next chance is set to come against Penn State on Saturday in State College, Pa. Kickoff between the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions is scheduled for 8 p.m. read more

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Greek Australian small business owners will be able to reap impressive tax breaks from the federal budget as the government hopes to boost economic productivity.Businesses making more than $2 million will receive a 1.5 per cent tax cut, while smaller businesses like sole traders and trusts will see a 5 per cent cut.Greek Australian businessmen and women will also be given an incentive to buy new equipment and replace ageing infrastructure. Starting from budget night, small businesses can buy as many items under $20,000 and receive an immediate tax deduction on each item. It’s a measure Steve Soultanidis, owner of Oakleigh Fish ‘n’ Chippery says will help his business grow.“We’ve actually been talking about doing a new kitchen area, so spending a bit on the kitchen, making it more useful and easy to operate,” he tells Neos Kosmos. “I am expecting to invest more in the business and it gives me more opportunities to employ more people and help out part timers.”He says he was “impressed” the government decided to look after small businesses. The Hellenic Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry says while the government has played it safe, they have managed to create measures that will help spur on the economy. “We are pleased the government has focused on the small business sector by providing incentives we believe will stimulate the economy and hopefully lead on to further employment opportunities,” HACCI’s director of finance Steve Sakkas tells Neos Kosmos. “The recognition of all business types is important as it provides a level playing field and equality in the business sector.”Start ups get cut in red tapeThose hoping to open a business will have more incentive as the government moves to cut red tape.Business registration will be streamlined, with the government launching one website to act as a one-stop shop for setting up a business. Start-ups will also be able to immediately deduct expenses such as legal fees they incur when setting up a new company.Mr Sakkas has applauded the government for these measures, after seeing so many Greek Australians struggle to enter the business market and stay afloat in the first couple of years. “The government’s clear intention to reduce red tape will help all small business owners focus on operating their business rather than the paper work,” he says.Businesses that were launched before the measures will be able to deduct some of their start up costs if they happened in the last five years, while those that start after June 30, 2015 will be able to claim immediate deductions.Mr Sakkas admits he would have liked to have seen cash incentives rather than tax deductions make it into the budget instead.“While the accelerated timing advantage of an immediate deduction for start-up costs appears attractive a direct cash incentive would be more helpful than a tax deduction.”In 2013, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that an average of 44 small businesses were closing their doors every day. High labour and start up costs, rents and red tape were seen as the biggest hindrances to businesses surviving the first five years.last_img read more

Le 17 décembre 2011 à 16:07 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more

first_imgThe American Soybean Association (ASA) and the North Carolina Soybean Association sent letters today to North Carolina’s Congressional Delegation, Members of the North Carolina State Legislature, North Carolina Governor, and the North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture and Secretary of Commerce expressing concern and disappointment over the import of soybean meal from Brazil by several North Carolina livestock integrators. ASA President Mike Yost and North Carolina Soybean Association President Dick Tunnel co-signed the letters, citing estimated costs of the Brazilian transaction. The letters urge government officials to counsel the companies involved not to take $16 million out of North Carolina and U.S. soybean farmer pockets, and to urge the firms to reconsider proceeding with the importation of the two remaining shipments of Brazilian meal.Murphy Family Farms, Nash Johnson & Sons Farms, Prestage Farms, Carroll/Smithfield, and Goldsboro Milling, all North Carolina livestock integrators, contracted to import as much as 75,000 metric tons of soybean meal into the U.S., citing high domestic transportation costs as the reason for their action. According to trade sources, market analysts, and other livestock integrators, however, the group is likely losing $5.00 per ton on this deal. Skepticism about the economics of this Brazilian transaction is reinforced by the steadfast refusal of the North Carolina livestock integrators to share information on a confidential, non-disclosure basis. Cost estimates compiled by ASA from trade sources (see below) were provided to the firms for comment last month, with no response. This Brazilian imports by the North Carolina firms come during a time when U.S. soybean and soybean meal prices are at their lowest levels in 23 years and soybean supplies are the largest in over a decade.”It is hard to understand why these companies would turn their backs on the very farmers who have supported them during hard times”, said ASA President Mike Yost, a soybean producer from Murdock, Minnesota. “Soybean farmers this year are investing over $3 million in producer funds to help support pork and poultry exports. Soybean farmers also actively supported Federal assistance measures for the pork industry when it recently faced the lowest prices ever,” said Yost. The first of three shipments of Brazilian soybean meal recently arrived; the other two shipments are due in July and August. ASA and the North Carolina Soybean Association asked the North Carolina legislators to urge the companies to reconsider proceeding with the importation of the two remaining shipments of Brazilian meal.Soybean farmers clearly recognize and sincerely appreciate the domestic pork and poultry industries as their best customers of soybean meal. “We recognize that the health of our industries is closely linked. That is why we are so disappointed that these firms would turn their backs on North Carolina and other U.S. soybean farmers to complete a transaction with questionable economics at best, ” added Yost.Estimated Costs for Murphy Family Family Farms, Nash Johnson & Sons Farms, Prestage Farms, Carroll/Smithfield, and Goldsboro Million To Import Meal From Paranagua, Brazil Compiled from Various Trade Sources(all figures are in short tons)The most aggressive known Brazilian trade at the time of the purchase was $15/ton under U.S. soybean meal prices on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT).Cost of Brazilian Soybean Meal$15.00/ton savings under U.S. CBOT meal prices14.50/ton ocean freight costs to port of Wilmington, NC5.50/ton put-through costs (port charges, unloading, elevation, etc.)4.50/ton truck freight from port to feed mills3.00/ton grinding costs (since Brazilian meal is pelletized)8.00/ton quality spread between Brazilian and U.S. meal (Brazilian 47.5% Profat meal is higher fiber, lower protein, etc. than U.S. 48% HiPro meal)3.50/ton U.S. import tariff1.00/ton shrink$25.00/ton cost over U.S. CBOT meal prices which in early April were about $136/ton$136 + $25 = $161/ton cost of Brazilian soybean meal delivered to company feedmillsCost of U.S. Soybean MealMeal to companies was selling for $19-$20/ton over U.S. CBOT meal prices$136 + $20 = $156/ton cost of U.S. soybean meal delivered to company feedmillsConclusionMurphy Family Farms, Nash Johnson & Sons Farms, Prestage Farms, Carroll/Smithfield, and Goldsboro Milling likely are losing $5 per ton in order to import Brazilian soybean meal rather than purchase it from North Carolina and U.S. soybean farmerslast_img read more

Now, areas might go untouched for two years or more, and “we are sometimes pruning shrubs with chain saws,” Wills said. When the Vancouver City Council sought public input prior to the 2009-10 budget, which included citywide cuts, keeping up appearances didn’t rank as a high priority compared to core city services such as public safety. But now residents have seen how trashy the city can look, and complaints about medians, right-of-ways and parks have increased. In response to the increase in complaints, City Manager Eric Holmes included one-time funding in the 2015-16 budget for a 15th maintenance worker and a pilot project in which the city will hire prisoner crews from Larch Corrections Center in Yacolt.last_img read more

With interest, the amount now stands at Rs 1.92 crore. Srivastava said he would move the high court after getting a copy of the order. The land was acquisitioned in 2005-06 and at that time, the price paid was Rs 5,886 per decimal, Gupta said. first_img Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling Last week, Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians had his team prepare for all three of the teams they could have possibly faced in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. This week, they can focus solely on the Green Bay Packers, who beat the Washington Redskins 35-18 to advance to Saturday’s game, which will kickoff at 6:15 p.m. at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. The Cardinals and Packers squared off once already this season, with Arizona sacking Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers eight times — en route to a 38-8 win that clinched a first-round bye in the postseason. While that game was just a few weeks ago, Arians is not necessarily expecting history to repeat itself. LISTEN: Bruce Arians, Cardinals head coach The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo “It will be a different team this time around,” he told Bickley and Marotta on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Monday. “They obviously got a little confidence after the way they played yesterday, and they got some healthy offensive linemen back which will make a big difference in the game.“They ran the ball really well, so it’s a different team, especially if they get Sam Shields back.”The Packers had lost two games in a row prior to Sunday’s playoff victory, looking both bad and dysfunctional much of the time. In Washington, their sputtering offense generated 346 total yards, as Rodgers threw for 210 to go along with a pair of touchdowns. It was a far cry from how he performed in Arizona last month, when the Cardinals harassed him into completing just more than half his passes for 151 yards with one touchdown, one interception and three fumbles, two of which he lost (and were returned for touchdowns).Arians pointed out that the Packers were missing three offensive linemen when they last faced off, and understands they could have their entire starting front for the rematch.“Which is huge for them,” he said.Getting after Rodgers with the ferocity and frequency they did in December would go a long way toward the Cardinals having success and advancing to the NFC Championship Game. Recording another eight sacks against him would be great, but it’s difficult to imagine that happening again against one of the game’s most mobile and accurate quarterbacks. Other than that kind of pressure, Arians said the best way to slow Rodgers down is to stop Green Bay’s running game while forcing them to abandon it entirely.“You’ve got to shut down the running game, try to get them one-dimensional,” he said. “Offensively, you’ve got to score points and then we’re a man-to-man team, it has been a pretty good blueprint so far, but we’ve got to get him on the ground and not let him get out of the pocket.”Besides the Packers’ possible return to health and likelihood of performing better than they did the last time they were in Arizona, another intriguing part of this game is the fact that these teams, while not division rivals, do have some familiarity with each other.Arians said they kind of know what to expect from Green Bay having already spent time game planning for them once, though the same will go for the Packers in terms of readying for the Cardinals, too. And of course, just because the Cardinals dominated the first battle does not mean they will do so again in the second.“The ball bounced funny in that ball game,” Arians noted. “We turned it over, they turned it over, we go down and get a touchdown, it kind of turned that whole game around right before the half. “But I think our crowd will be super-excited, and we should be more than ready to go.” – / 36 0 Comments   Share   Top Stories Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (12) is sacked by Arizona Cardinals inside linebacker Dwight Freeney during the second half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015, in Glendale, Ariz.
