Paul McCartney has blogged at HuffingtonPost.co.uk about his life as a vegetarian.“Growing up in Liverpool, I would have thought of a vegetarian as a wimp,” he wrote. “We could be a prejudiced bunch at times but I’m not sure people would automatically think like that these days.“I’ve been a vegetarian for a long time now and over the years I’ve seen how the attitudes have changed around the world, so I’m not surprised when I see new research that shows more and more people are increasingly adopting ‘meat free eating’. Even 20 years ago, it could sometimes be difficult to find vegetarian options in good restaurants. Now it’s great to see more and more choice with some brilliant creative dishes in restaurants, cafés and supermarkets. There is definitely now an overall greater acceptance of being vegetarian.“People don’t just see it as an issue about kindness to animals. For us, at the time it was about that. One day I had an epiphany. I was taking animals’ lives. These days though, people are better educated about their diets and the health benefits of reducing meat intake but also and crucially the environmental impact that meat production has on our planet. The UN actually produced a report in 2006 (Livestock’s Long Shadow) outlining how the livestock industry was responsible for more harmful gases than the transport industry – they said the best thing you can do is reduce your meat intake. For this campaign some interesting research was produced, predicting a 50% rise in vegetarianism in the UK and the idea of ‘flexitarianism’ becoming more widespread as people become educated about the impact of meat eating on health and the environment. It’s becoming more and more clear that one of the most effective things any individual can do to help the environment is to eat less meat.“We launched a Meat Free Monday campaign in 2009 in order to encourage people to look at their diets and make a meaningful change by giving up meat just one day a week. It’s not a new idea; it’s something that is done in many places around the world. We thought Monday was a good day to do it as many people tend to overdo it at the weekend. People thought recycling was a bit weird at first but now it’s weird if you don’t recycle!”To read the full post, click here.Source:HuffingtonPost.co.uk

MONTREAL – A newly formed cybersecurity collective out of Montreal has developed a free app for smartphone users designed to protect their data from cybersecurity threats.Dubbed Protection, the app is designed to help users detect security breaches and scam attempts in their emails, texts and other apps, as well as give tips to prevent future hacks. In a rare collaboration between competing financial institutions, Desjardins Group, National Bank of Canada and Deloitte say they are creating a non-profit organization called CyberEco to combat identity and data theft. The three companies — along with engineering firm RHEA Group — say they are investing several million dollars in the project, which includes a new research chair in cybercrime prevention at the University of Montreal funded by Desjardins and National Bank.Demand for cybersecurity services has “literally exploded” as hacking attempts become more common, said Deloitte managing partner Marc Perron at a media conference Wednesday.“Like all companies, we are being attacked,” he told The Canadian Press in an interview.“We see people getting into a system and asking for ransom from a company, or trying to leverage the fact that they took data to get some money out of it,” Perron said. “So the question is, how do you protect your system?”Cyberattacks in Canada and around the world are a growing threat. The Bank of Montreal and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce both suffered data breaches last May. In late 2017 Equifax announced that a massive data breach compromised the personal information and credit card details of 143 million Americans and 100,000 Canadians.National Bank president and chief executive Louis Vachon said cybersecurity has mushroomed into a matter of national security, which “could become even more acute in years to come.”Amir Belkhelladi, who runs cybersecurity for Deloitte in Eastern Canada, said CyberEco aims to foster a training space to learn from previous breaches and defend against future ones.“When you have a fire brigade, they never practise on the fire live in your house; they practise it outside. Yet in cyber, historically, people have been waiting for the attack to respond to it,” Belkhelladi said in an interview.“So far, we’re fighting for talent instead of generating the talent,” he added. To expand the talent pool and share more of its technology with the public, CyberEco hopes to draw other major financial institutions to its projects.Representatives from several banks were on hand at the downtown event in Montreal’s Quartier de l’innovation, including Loic Jegousse, head of cyber and IT risk at a BNP Paribas team that launched in Montreal last May. He said the international bank is considering committing staff and cash to CyberEco projects.“We have been in conversations with CyberEco,” he said. “Possibly in the near future we would like to join, because to me it’s a great opportunity to tap into a bigger networking group, a bigger set of talent, and an opportunity to collaborate on common problems.”Companies in this story: (TSX:NA, TSX:CM, TSX:BMO)
New Delhi: Public sector telecom carrier BSNL has said there is no plan to effect any lay-offs in the company, as well as any move to reduce the retirement age although an attractive VRS is underway for “willing” employees. “Turnaround of BSNL being devised by DoT and BSNL includes allotment of 4G spectrum and offering lucrative VRS to willing staff. Reduction of retirement age or laying off employees is not at all being considered. BSNL denies any such media appearances in this regard,” CMD of BSNL Anupam Shrivastava has tweeted . Speaking at the commencement of the University’s School of Continuing and Professional Education, which included the first batch of graduates from the Program of Global Affairs, Mr. Malloch Brown praised the students for their “determination and initiative” to pursue further studies and a career at the same time, and recalled his own experiences relating to continuing education.“As a former chief of the UN Development Programme, I have a particular perspective on continuing education: that of the countries of Southern Africa as they emerged from long and vicious civil wars. In places like Mozambique and Namibia, many of today’s leaders spent their traditional university years in the bush as freedom fighters. Yet when justice and democracy were established, many of the rebels went back to school,” he said.“Mozambique became, almost literally, a country governed by continuing education. The determination to learn reflected a determination to rebuild. To put the war years behind them and to regain lost ground, Mozambicans decided that it was never too late to learn, to go to school, to set a new course for themselves.”Recalling these examples, Mr. Malloch Brown told the students that their studies in NYU’s classrooms “should be the beginning, not the end, of a lifetime of learning,” adding that his own continuing education has been based on a sense of “global citizenship – a readiness to change countries more often than jobs.”He also outlined the breadth of the UN’s work, from promoting democracy and literacy, encouraging investment and trade, to ensuring decent education, checking nuclear proliferation and combating bird flu, highlighting that whatever the students’ fields of study, the world body’s work “concerns all of you.”“More than half a century ago a great New Yorker, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, made a passionate plea for America’s global engagement. ‘We have learned that we cannot live alone, at peace; that our own well-being is dependent on the well-being of other nations, far away,’ he declared. ‘We have learned that we must live as men, and not as ostriches, nor as dogs in the manger. We have learned to be citizens of the world, members of the human community.’ ”The Deputy Secretary-General voiced hope that the graduates would “continue to represent not just the ideals of this University and the vibrancy of this city, but also the exhortation of President Roosevelt,” adding “that, ultimately, is the charge of global citizenship.”
Pursuing its policy of helping stricken countries to recover from natural disasters, the United Nations tourism agency has appealed to tourists to continue to travelling to parts of Indonesia not damaged by the 27 May earthquake that struck the Yogyakarta area, killing more than 6,000 people and displacing 200,000 others. The best way to help is for travellers to keep on visiting, the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) declared at a meeting of its Risk Assessment and Management Working Group in Madrid. “The tragic events in Central Java demonstrate the pressing need for UNWTO to strengthen and structure its preparedness and response support activities to address different types of crises continuously affecting tourism,” French Tourism Director Frédéric Pierret stressed.Since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that devastated a dozen countries in the region, killing more than 200,000 people and displacing millions more, UNTWO has been seeking to mitigate the impact in the tourism sector and this boost economic recovery. Last year it called on the world’s media to take care in its coverage of destinations hit by the disaster so as to avoid a new “infodemic,” a repeat of the slump that hit Asian tourism two years earlier when an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) killed 774 people and infected more than 8,000 worldwide, the vast majority of them in China. The working group, chaired by Mr. Pierret, had met to review UNWTO’s progress on bird flu preparedness and map out a new programme of activities for dealing with all types of tourism crises. “The working group first met in March to deal with avian flu, but since then there have been two other unrelated crises – in Egypt (terrorist bombs) and in Indonesia – so its work will need to be expanded gradually to comprise all man-made and natural disasters, which may impact tourism,” UNWTO Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli said. After terrorist bombings in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh last July, the agency offered the country its full support in helping it to surmount the negative impact on its flourishing tourism industry. A second bomb attack in April in Dahab killed some 20 people.
OTTAWA – British Columbia gave its blessing Tuesday to enhancing the Canada Pension Plan, a critical vote of support that opens the door for Ottawa to gradually increase contributions and benefits for future retirees. After a three-month delay, the B.C. government said it decided to back the proposal after considering feedback from stakeholders. That was quickly followed by a declaration of victory from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who said legislation would be introduced in the House of Commons “shortly” now that all nine of the provinces taking part have agreed to the enhancement.Initially, every province except Quebec backed a tentative deal to expand CPP and they agreed to finalize it by July 15.But B.C. was the lone signatory that declined to ratify the agreement-in-principle by the deadline, saying it needed more time to consult businesses and individuals.“After hearing from thousands of British Columbians and Canadians, I’m confident the changes will have a meaningful impact on retirement income security at an affordable contribution rate,” B.C. Finance Minister Michael de Jong said in a statement.B.C.’s approval was crucial for the CPP’s expansion. Reforming the public pension plan has been a central goal for federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau, but he needed the support of at least seven provinces representing no less than two-thirds of Canada’s population.“A year ago, you’ll remember that we promised Canadians that we would work to enhance the Canada Pension Plan in collaboration with provinces,” Morneau said Tuesday in Ottawa.“We know it’s going to have a huge impact on Canadians and for that we are so pleased to be following through on this commitment.”Morneau was also asked whether it was purely coincidental that B.C.’s support for CPP came about a week after the feds gave conditional approval to a huge liquefied natural gas project in the province.“It is,” he replied.“Michael de Jong was a big supporter (of CPP expansion) at the table. They went back to British Columbia and realized that they wanted to do consultations. They finished those consultations and are pleased to be supporting this.”The B.C. government has called the controversial Pacific NorthWest LNG project a key economic driver for the province and the country. Opponents, including First Nations, have denounced the project over concerns about its impacts on the environment and fish habitats. The CPP proposal has faced criticism from political opponents as well as business owners, who will have to boost contributions over seven years starting in 2019 for their workers.Dan Kelly, president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, said Tuesday that employers may be forced to freeze salaries and benefits to manage the extra costs. Some businesses, Kelly warned, have said they may have to eliminate jobs.“With a flat economy and yesterday’s announcement of five years of increasing carbon taxes/pricing, I’m not sure where our governments think small business owners and employees will find the money to pay for seven years of CPP hikes,” Kelly said in a statement, referring to the feds’ announcement this week of a national floor price on carbon.Kelly also said Ottawa never fulfilled its pledge from the March federal budget to consult Canadians before expanding CPP.Interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose has described CPP expansion as a “tax hike” that will cost families thousands of dollars.Earlier this month, the federal government said it expected the changes to slow economic and employment growth slightly in the short term before boosting both in the long run.The expansion will increase retirement benefits for all working Canadians — not for people who are already retired. The government said it will take roughly 40 years of contributions for a worker to get the most out of the enriched benefit, therefore young people just entering the workforce are expected to receive the biggest returns.Once the proposed changes are fully implemented in 2025, Canadians would pay between $9 and $42 more into the plan every two weeks. They will eventually provide future retirees with one-third of their average annual incomes — up from one-quarter. The adjustments will also increase the maximum amount of income subject to CPP by 14 per cent, to $82,700.The reform will provide a tax deduction, instead of a tax credit, on the increased contributions by employees, which Ottawa expects will reduce government revenues by about $710 million by 2021-22.The changes would also cost about $260 million a year from the public treasury to help offset the additional financial burden that expansion would eventually place on low-income earners. Ottawa would enhance its refundable working income tax benefit to help compensate eligible low-wage earners for the higher pension contributions.Follow @AndyBlatchford on Twitter by Andy Blatchford, The Canadian Press Posted Oct 4, 2016 10:07 am MDT Last Updated Oct 4, 2016 at 1:00 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email After delay, B.C. agrees to back Ottawa’s proposal to expand Canada Pension Plan
CINCINNATI — Jeff Driskel headed directly from the practice field to the podium in the media room and headed for Andy Dalton’s usual seat. In countless ways, the third-year quarterback has entered a new frontier.Until last Sunday, he’d never gotten into a game because of an injury. He’s practicing with the Bengals’ starting offence this week for the first time all season. And on Sunday, he’ll make his first career start against the Broncos (5-6) at Paul Brown Stadium in a game the Bengals (5-6) need to win to maintain any hopes of reaching the playoffs.“All right!” he said, settling into a chair behind the microphone. He’s been waiting a long time for such a chance.Driskel was hoping to lead the Florida Gators after Tim Tebow’s departure, but he broke his leg and wasn’t able to win the job. He transferred to Louisiana Tech for the 2015 season, threw for 4,033 yards and was drafted by San Francisco in the sixth round. The Bengals claimed him off waivers before the 2016 season. They liked his arm, his mobility and how he responded in pressure situations, keeping him as the No. 3 behind Dalton and AJ McCarron. Last year, he broke his passing hand in the final preseason game and hurt his non-passing arm while playing the role of receiver during practice late in the season.McCarron won a grievance and became a free agent after the season. Driskel competed with Matt Barkley for the backup job during training camp, getting it when Barkley hurt his left knee in the final preseason game. Now, he’s got a chance to finish the season as the starter.Dalton is out for the season with an injured right thumb , suffered during a 35-20 loss to Cleveland on Sunday. Driskel knows it’s an opportunity that could be a turning point in his career, even though he can’t think of it that way.“We’re just kind of worried about this week,” he said Wednesday. “If you start to let your mind wander into the distance, you can’t narrow your focus on this week.”His biggest challenge this week is not allowing the pressure to bother him.“Just stay relaxed,” coach Marvin Lewis said. He’ll have one advantage. Receiver A.J. Green returned to practice on a limited basis Wednesday after missing the past three games with an injured toe on his right foot. Green said he expects to play on Sunday, barring a setback in practice during the week. Without Green, the offence has struggled in three straight losses.“I’m just happy to be playing football again,” Green said. “These last four weeks have been tough.”The biggest change in the offence will be Driskel’s ability to run. He threw his first NFL touchdown pass and ran for another against Cleveland, beating a safety to the end zone.“He had a pretty good one on that touchdown run and he said, ‘Well, I wasn’t really running that fast,’” offensive co-ordinator Bill Lazor said.WHIRLWINDThe Bengals claimed quarterback Tom Savage off waivers from San Francisco on Monday, providing a backup for Driskel. It’s Savage’s third team this season — the Saints waived him in the final cuts. He packed a bag of clothes and arrived on Tuesday.“Three systems in three months — completely different,” Savage said. “But it’s all (football). You’ve just got to throw it to the open guy.”TACKLE PROBLEMSLeft tackle Cordy Glenn was inactive for the game against the Browns with a back injury. Replacement Jake Fisher hurt his back in the game and didn’t return. Both were held out of practice Wednesday, along with DE Carlos Dunlap (hip). CB Dre Kirkpatrick (shoulder) and LB Nick Vigil (knee) were limited.___More AP NFL: https://apnews.com/tag/NFL and https://twitter.com/AP_NFLJoe Kay, The Associated Press
TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY has denied that the new personal insolvency legislation gives banks an effective veto over any debt relief for struggling individuals.Enda Kenny told the Dáil that the Personal Insolvency Act, which has been passed by the Oireachtas but not yet fully commenced, did not grant banks a veto over the rearrangement of an individual’s affairs.“The banks have no veto over the insolvency legislation,” he said. “That’s why it’s an incentive for banks to sit down with clients and deal with their particular clients.”The comments came ahead of a press event being held by Michael Noonan today, where a new programme encouraging banks to deal with customers in mortgage difficulty is to be unveiled.“The government want to see a fair and a transparent process here for dealing with mortgages,” Kenny said.“What we want to do is get the 100,000 people in mortgage arrears and distressed […] psychological relief that their home is not being taken from them.”Kenny was speaking after both Micheál Martin of Fianna Fáil, and Sinn Féin’s Gerry Adams, criticised the government’s perceived inaction on the matter.“Will there be independent oversight over the deals that the banks will strike with individuals?” Martin asked, complaining that 119 sections of the Personal Insolvency Act had yet to be activated.Kenny said the Central Bank would have independent oversight over any arrangement reached between commercial lenders and ordinary borrowers.Read: Kenny defends Government’s stance on dealing with mortgage arrears
A man put out a blaze in his east Vancouver home’s kitchen cabinets with a garden hose after they caught fire Thursday afternoon, but the fire did enough damage to displace the family of eight living there. The Vancouver Fire Department was called to the house, in the 600 block of Northeast 132nd Avenue in the Fircrest neighborhood, shortly before 11:45 a.m.Department spokesman Kevin Stromberg said firefighters arrived a few minutes after the call, and saw smoke coming from the front door of a two-story home. Two adults and a child had fled the house, he said, and let firefighters know everyone was out.One of the adults said he was in his garage when he heard a popping sound coming from the electrical box.

Makeshift shops on the footpath at the Mirpur-10 intersection on Sunday. Photo: Prothom AloAbout 2,000 hawkers sit along the footpaths around the Mirpur-10 intersection in the capital. The hawkers have to pay around Tk 50 to 100 every day to run their businesses there. These businesses on the footpaths leave hardly any space for pedestrians. The traffic intersection spans wards 3, 7 and 14 of Dhaka North City Corporation. The south section of the four-way over-bridge is in ward 14. The footpaths have all sorts of shops — permanent and makeshift — selling everything from fruits to cell phone accessories as well as clothes, wallets, toiletries and more. There are also second hand book and magazine stalls, tea stalls and so on. At several points the shops take up the entire footpath. Six ‘linemen’, depending on the trade, extort Tk 50 to 100 every day, according to several businessmen in the area, declining to be named. They said the ‘toll money’ totals over Tk 100,000 every night. The booty is later shared among local policemen and Awami League leaders and members, they added.None of the businessmen agreed to name any ‘lineman’, who collected the toll.”We have to keep everyone happy if we are to do business. Even then the police often creates trouble for us,” said a cell phone accessory trader in front of the Shah Ali Plaza market in the area.A fruit seller tried to stop this reporter from taking photos and asked him to delete the pictures already taken. He moved away when asked his identity. The pedestrians are compelled to use the main road at the risk of their lives because of the illegal encroachment of the pavements.”I have to wait for the bus on the main road,” said Lamia Rahman, a Jahangirnagar University student.Haris Molla, a resident of Senpara Parbata, said, “I have to push and shove though people every morning as I take my daughter to college. Many of the students use the main road to avoid the hassle.”Last Ramadan, councilor of ward no. 14, Md. Humayun Rashid had said hawkers in his area would be ousted after Eid.”I cannot carry out the eviction on my own. It’s a joint task to ensure the hawkers cannot re-occupy the footpaths as soon as they are evicted,” Humayun said.”An eviction operation was conducted during mayor Annisul Huq’s term. But it was futile,” another councilor Md. Mobashsher Chowdhury from ward no. 7, said.Comments of the ward 3 councilor could not be taken as he was abroad.”None of the leaders or members of Awami League are involved in the extortion or money distribution. If anyone commits anything in the name of the party, that’s not our responsibility,” Azadul Kabir, general secretary of Mirpur thana Awami League, said denying the allegations. The estate department of DNCC is liable to evict the illegal businessmen from footpaths.”Generally the eviction is carried out for repairs or other reasons. There is no plan to dislodge the traders now,” said the chief estate officer Aminul Islam.”The stalls are simply set up again the following day,” he further said.Asked about the distribution of the toll money among the policemen, inspector (investigation) Aslam Uddin from Kafrul station said, “I cannot say what the others at the police station do. But I myself never take money from anyone.””I’ve been shifted to this police station (Mirpur) about a week ago. I have been busy with the student movement as soon as I came here,” said the officer-in-charge at Mirpur police station, Dadan Fakir, adding, “I shall verify the allegations.”

Sponsored Stories Comments Share Sturgeon called the talks “constructive,” and said the two agreed that previously drawn up plans to transfer greater governing powers from London to Scotland should be implemented as soon as possible. But she said she and Cameron disagreed on whether Scotland should control all of its tax and spending policies.Scotland has its own parliament and government, which decide policies on topics including health care, justice and education, but it must defer to the central U.K. government in London on broader issues such as defense, immigration and fiscal policies. The two share the same currency — the pound.Cameron has pledged to introduce legal changes that would allow the Scottish government to control some policies including the rates of income tax in Scotland and some welfare spending. That does not go far enough for Sturgeon, however. She says Scots want to take more substantial control over their economy, including the right to decide their own minimum wage, employment laws and business taxes.Sturgeon’s party upended Britain’s political landscape last week when it swept 56 of Scotland’s 59 seats in the 650-seat U.K. Parliament. That surge made the SNP the third-largest bloc in the House of Commons — after Cameron’s Conservatives and the Labour Party — a force that Cameron cannot ignore. The prime minister said he remained committed to delivering a stronger Scottish parliament, and would consider “sensible suggestions.” But he also pledged to keep the four regions that make up the U.K. — Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland — together in one united nation.“I’m a great believer that in our United Kingdom we want a strong Scottish parliament. But we also want the solidarity between the different parts of the U.K. and I don’t want to lose that,” he said. The SNP failed to realize its dream of making Scotland an independent country last year, when Scots voted 55 percent to 45 percent to remain inside the U.K. in a historic referendum. But since then the party’s popularity has surged, not diminished, and Sturgeon argues that support clearly shows Scots want a sea change in British politics that listens to their aspirations.Sturgeon said Friday that Cameron had a choice to make about how he responds to the strong vote for her party.“He can act as if it is business as usual and nothing has changed, and people will draw their own conclusions from that,” she said. “They will think that Westminster isn’t capable of listening or responding.” Check your body, save your life 4 must play golf courses in Arizona Top Stories Milstead says best way to stop wrong-way incidents is driving sober Former Arizona Rep.
